As an emergency management coordinator at UC San Diego Health, Ana Arevalo helps the hospital system prepare for the unexpected — such as pandemics, power outages and mass causality events — by conducting trainings and exercises that reveal gaps and strengths in day-to-day operations.

Applying the principles of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) within the walls of the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego may lead to more inclusive and healthier work and learning environments, but learning to apply these to the practice of public health is another undertaking altogether.

Whether helping adults transition to living in their community after being released from the California prison system or designing the first nationally representative survey of CBD users, the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science is leveraging existing research strengths at UC San Diego to build programs that address key 21st century public health challenges.

Public health is a commitment to the community. Tested frameworks for prevention, sustainability and innovation are applied to serve the greater good. Diverse arrays of leaders, students and stakeholders come together to pool their expertise, share their resources and improve outcomes. Collaboration is key.
